Your First Reformer Pilates Class at Kat’s Studio.

Updated: Sep 12, 2024

So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and try a Reformer Pilates class at Kat’s Studio! We’re thrilled to welcome you on this journey, and we know it can be a little daunting if you’re not sure what to expect. But rest assured, at Kat’s Studio, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive, friendly environment where people of all abilities feel comfortable and supported. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone with experience, you’ll be in safe hands with Kat Kirkman, our highly experienced instructor.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect during your first class, along with a few handy tips to help you feel confident and ready.

Before You Arrive: What to Wear and Bring

First things first—let’s talk about what to wear. You’ll want to dress in comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move freely but isn’t too baggy. Leggings or form-fitting exercise trousers and a snug T-shirt or top are ideal. This allows your instructor, Kat, to easily see your alignment and form, which is key in Pilates.

As for footwear, Reformer Pilates is typically done barefoot or with non-slip grip socks, which help prevent your feet from sliding during exercises. If you don’t have any, don’t worry—grip socks can often be purchased at the studio.

Bringing a water bottle is a good idea to stay hydrated throughout the session. While Reformer Pilates isn’t as intensely sweaty as some other workouts, you’ll still be using your muscles and core strength, and it’s important to stay hydrated. A small towel can also come in handy, especially if you’re working up a bit of a sweat.

Arriving at the Studio: A Warm Welcome

When you arrive at Kat’s Studio, you’ll immediately be welcomed into a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our studio is designed to be a calming and supportive space, where everyone feels at ease. Kat will introduce herself and help you get familiar with the Reformer machine—a piece of equipment that can look a bit intimidating at first, but is much easier to use than it seems!

Kat will walk you through the basics of the Reformer, showing you how it works and how the different springs and straps help control resistance to make the exercises both challenging and adaptable to your level.

During the Class: What You’ll Be Doing

A Reformer Pilates class typically starts with a gentle warm-up to engage your core and help you focus on your breath—both of which are crucial in Pilates. You’ll move through a variety of exercises that target different muscle groups, focusing on controlled movements, balance, and alignment.

Each exercise is done slowly and mindfully, which allows you to really tune into your body and feel which muscles are working. The Reformer’s springs create resistance, which makes the movements more challenging, but Kat will offer different levels of resistance depending on your experience and strength level. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, there’s always a way to tailor the exercise to suit you.

Kat’s supportive teaching style means that she’ll guide you every step of the way, offering gentle corrections and encouragement. There’s no pressure to be perfect, and everyone progresses at their own pace. If you’re feeling apprehensive, don’t worry—there’s no judgement here, just a supportive space where you can learn and grow.

After the Class: Stretch and Hydrate

After completing your exercises, the class will usually end with some gentle stretches and cool-down movements to release any tension and help your body recover. You’ll feel lengthened, strengthened, and centred after your first class—perhaps a little sore (in a good way!), but definitely accomplished.

Post-class, make sure to rehydrate with some water and listen to your body. If you’re new to Pilates, you may experience some mild muscle soreness the next day, but this is just your body adjusting to the new movements.
